Pattaya boasts a rich and diverse calendar of annual events, festivals and sporting occasions all along the year, during high or low tourist season, some of them coincide with national celebrations, others are local events. They are an excellent opportunity for getting to know more about Thai traditions and customs, while having fun.

If only I’d known…

Whether you are on holiday or already living in Pattaya wishing to have a short holidays, it is advisable to plan ahead for hotel bookings. For doing so, you should have  in mind:

  • Some of these celebrations derive from the Lunar calendar, so  it might be that the dates, but not  aways  months, change each year.
  • Although the events and festivals are usually scheduled for the same month each year, do not take dates for granted. It wouldn’t be surprising whether events were postponed or rescheduled without notice, so in light of this , it is wise always double check dates and schedules of any event  organised in Pattaya before you make your plans, with the exception, of course of the Buddhist and Royal celebrations.

We have listed, for you to start getting familiarised with, celebrations and the more favourite events that you will witness when living in the city. We have included a short explanation  of each one, but as always happens, an image is better than a thousand  words, as the saying  goes, so,  we have added pictures. When we haven’t got our own image, well, we just researched among articles published by the local  weekly – written in English newspaper, Pattaya Mail, which it  is a worthy way of getting informed about all what is happening in the city. Keep that in mind when you move in here.

April:

Chakri Memorial Day

This is a National  Public holiday, being celebrated through all Thailand on April, 6th. For further information of its meaning, please go to our page: Thai Holidays and Festivals

Songkran Festival ( Wan Lai festival)

Although at national level, Songkrang is celebrated from 13th to 15th  of April, in Pattaya, this is only the beginning of the Songkrang period that ends on the following weekend, meaning that we have at least, one week of trowing-splashing water.

Pattaya’s Wan Lai Festival or Songkran Flowing Day (Thai New Year) is held on 19 April. It is on this date when people practice their water-throwing tradition…Everyone splashes water to each other regardless of acquaintances, relatives or passerby strangers. Pattaya City also holds traditional event such as water pouring for the elderly and parade.

If only I’d known:

  • Being in Pattaya, we ‘must’ participate of this celebration at least once, just for having an idea and feeling of what this is. There are no enough words to explain it, we have to ‘experience’ it. So, wear conformable cloth , flip flops, be prepared to be wrenched after the first minute you get on the road..do not take camera, mobile, nothing that could be spoiled from getting soaked..and go to enjoy ..again, at least for once time.
  • The following years, after you already got the “feeling” of the Thai Songkrang, you could take two decisions: plan a trip abroad that week …or just go to the supermarket, staff your fridge and do not move from home until Songkrang ends. One clarification: the soaking celebration start after 10,00 am and ends, usually with the exception of Bars zones, at evenings. So, having this in mind, you could dare to go to town before or after those hours.

Song Krang

There is not a free-water area in Pattaya during Song Krang celebrations. While to the rest of the country Thai New Year celebrations last three days, from April 13th to 15th, here, in Pattaya they go up to 19th or 20th. There are some time limitations, just for people being able to go and come back from jobs, but during the rest of the day, well, it is just as the picture shows. Song Krang in Naklua. November:

Loy Krathong Festival

The delightful Loy Krathong Festival, is celebrated nation-wide on the full moon night in November to pay respect to the goddess of water. The ‘krathong’ traditionally made of banana-leaf is left to float into the sea or on the river.

The Krathong floating festival in Pattaya consists of  floral floats, sport events, beauty contests, cultural performances, food stalls and a plethora of carnival-like activities, exhibitions, in particular a spectacular display of fireworks on the beach. It is an amazing spectacle to see not only along Pattaya’s beaches, but also going to Mabprachan Lake.

If only I’d known…

Although it is not a public holiday, it is really worth going out for dinner at any place close to the sea or Pattaya’s lakes or reservoirs, and when midnight approaches, wait for the full moon, ask three wishes…and juts put slowly and smoothy your own ‘khratong’ on the water…

Pattaya New Year Countdown & Fireworks Display

Pattaya Countdown is taken place at Bali Hai Pier and easily could be considered one of the longest New Year celebrations in Thailand because they start on Christmas day until December 31st, New year Eve..

Every evening you could  have a walk along  Pattaya Beach Road just to find  merchants selling delicious foods from all regions of Thailand as well as souvenirs and crafts while enjoying  concerts from famous Thai artists and celebrities. But without any doubt, the highlight is the amazing display of fireworks on New Year eve, starting at midnight and lasting at least a full fifteen minutes, during which the full length of Pattaya beach,  going from Naklua, all the way south along the coast toward Jomtien’ and Na Jomtien are lit by thousands of fireworks. It is an extraordinary and imposing spectacle .

If only I’d known…

  • Although the main stage is located at Bali Hai pier, it is really worth going to any place you can get along Pattaya beach . May be a good idea could be just to book New Year dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area, and after midnight, enjoy the fireworks..

  • As nearly every hotel organizes a fire work display, it could be a good idea to head to south, to Jomtien, Na Jomtien  hotels, book a night at one of those hotels that are on the beach, enjoy New Year dinner, and the fireworks…making this a special celebration

  • Or, it is possible to book a place on one of the charter boats , so you could enjoy a delicious dinner , and enjoy the fireworks from the sea while toasting for the new year…

  • Another different and still not fully discovered by tourists is go to Koh Larn, stay at any of the many bungalows that the small town offers, go at midnight to the pier and enjoy the view of the whole Pattaya bay ‘s sky on fire, literally. This could an unforgettable New Year celebration.

  • Traffic is often gridlocked and many roads are blocked. So, if you are thinking of going  into town for your dinner and afterwards fireworks spectacle, do it  early in the day, preferably without your car. Also it would be a great idea, and a different way of starting a New Year, by staying overnight at one of the many hotels that  Pattaya has to offer, you avoid the problem of getting home again.
