Our Children

Moving In with Children 6

Moving into a foreign country with children is an important decision to make, because they do not ask to come, they are brought , following their parents’ decision…So, we must double check each one of the aspects that will allow our children to have a happy life in this new home country. When moving into another country, and it could be any , in the same way that we, adults, leave behind relatives, family and friends, our children leave behind their  Home, as they knew it, and the security that all that means..

We  bring our children  to a foreign country where they, as well as us ,know nobody or anything related to our new life, and that includes whether we would find  International Schools with English curricula (British or US), or whether our children will make friends easily, or  if they will like here, or  whether …and the list go on and on.

We, as a family, need to start anew, to make a new home, so far from Home.

So, based on our own experience of years living in Pattaya, we  have explored resources that will save your time and effort, finding links with reliable information, trying to make a list of choices as broad as possible, without judgment because it is, in the end, a personal decision.

In this simple, humble way , it is how  we are  Linking Pattaya Together...

Our Children’s Education: International Education in Pattaya

When arriving in Pattaya with a young family, a major concern is, beyond any doubt, their education. Fortunately, in this area, educational options vary from small playgroups, through nurseries and kindergartens to primary  and secondary international schools.

So, our choice will depend of different factors, as the children’s age, the anticipated length of our stay in Pattaya, the financial costs, and our preference for a British or American education for our children.

If only I’d known…

  • A factor that couldn’t be overlooked is the schools’ fees which vary from school to school and according to the age of the child. It is important to have this in mind when discussing with the personnel involved, particularly at what age the company will contribute to educational costs, if you come to Pattaya on a company-sponsored assignment.
  • All major schools in Pattaya and its area offer Pre-School education. It is highly advisable to have this in mind, especially if your child will continue on to Elementary/ Primary school.
  • It is recommended to decide whether you’d prefer American or British Education for your children before choosing a school, that might save a lot of time.
  • If your child is younger than the limit accepted by these schools, there are a wide list of nursery schools, kindergartens and playgroups, which cater specifically for pre-school children.
  • The majority of the International schools are located outside Pattaya city and have double schooling. So,at the time of choosing where to live,  it would be highly advisable to visit them in order to know how long it would take for your children to get there.
  • Also, it is advisable to check before taking any decision, whether the school has a bus or any other means of transportation, before taking any decision.
  • It is highly advisable to take all the time you need to visit each school, not only to see the buildings, but other facilities and services that will make your children’s stay more comfortable, as canteen area, transportation, emergency care, extra curricular activities,  facilities.

Best International Schools in Pattaya city

The International Schools within the Eastern Seaboard area, are based on either the American or the British National Curricula, so the education is in English. For those children who are non-native English speakers, these schools offer “English as a second Language” ( ESL) programs, if the children need to improve their English.
The diversity of nationalities presents a priceless opportunity for learning about other cultures  allowing children to cultivate cross-cultural awareness, widening their knowledge and tolerance, generating  a unique opportunity to became open minded students and young adults.

All public and private schools are supervised by the Ministry of Education, so Thai studies are included in the curriculum.

High School programs ( IGCSE, British Advanced ‘A Levels’, IB)  are offered in the majority of these schools, so this, and the complexities of the educational systems worldwide and its implications for the future  placement of students in universities, is an important fact to consider at the time of choosing the school for your children.

International General Certificate Of Secondary School Education (IGCSE)

IGCSE courses are designed as two -year courses for examination at 14-16 years old and offer similar syllabuses to the  GCSE courses offered by UK schools, and they are also designed by Cambridge University.

IGCSE courses are taught and examined in English, and as we have said, they have an additional course, called “English as a Second Language” available for non-native English speaking students.

IGCSE provides a foundation for pre-university courses such as the North American Advanced Test ( AP), the International Baccalaureate ( IB), the Australian Matriculation and the GCE advanced ‘A’ level for British universities.

British Advanced ‘AS and ‘A’ Levels

In schools following the British curriculum, ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level courses are examined at the end of years 12 and 13 respectively. Usually students take three to five ‘AS’ level subjects in Year 12 and then, take choose three of these subjects to continue their studies to ‘A’ level at the end of year 13, which would reflect their career goals. Success in ‘A’ levels helps give a student access to top universities around the world.

International Baccalaureate ( IB)

The IB certificate was created by the University of Geneva in the late 1960’s. It was intended to combine the American, British and French systems in a way that would facilitate accreditation and exchange between universities worldwide.

It is a two year pre-university program  (when students are 16 to 18 years old), and aims  to be an internationally recognized qualification for the participating  schools. As not all schools in the Pattaya area offer this program, it is highly advisable to check before choosing the school for your children, if you wish them to get this certificate.

This course is a challenging program, and the school must be accepted by the head office in Geneva. The IB is recognized and welcomed at many high standard universities around the world.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the  United States and Canada,  created by the American College Board, which offers college-level  curricula  and examinations to high school students.

American colleges and universities often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. For a high school course to have the AP designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain that it satisfies the AP curriculum.

Many non-American universities around the world also accept the AP program.

You could find more information visiting the Regents International School Pattaya websites:

Summer Schools

If your family does not go back to your home country for summer holidays, or at least,  for the full eight weeks, there is a good option here in Pattaya. Nearly all international schools offer a Summer School  which provides unusual  learning opportunities for your children.

Summer schools tend to be more relaxed so it’s the optimal learning environment in which children can benefit. So, it is worth asking at the school which your children attend to.
